Pome or Drupe

The sign reads:

Pome or Drupe? Pome fruits consist of a fleshy layer with five or more seeds in a capsule. Drupe fruits,  on the other hand, have a fleshy layer with a single hard “stone” in the center. The stones can also be  called a pit.

Pome fruits. Several small seeds are encapsulated by a tough membrane known as the “core” Apples  and pears are pome fruits.

Drupe fruits. The stone “pit” is sometimes called a seed, but that is a mistake, as the seed is inside the  stone. Cherries, peaches, apricots, and plums are all drupe fruits.

Fun fact! Botanically speaking, a coconut is a fibrous one-seeded drupe. Since it grows from a tree is can  also be classified as a tree nut.

The bottom of the sign features drawings of an apple, pear, coconut, and peach.
